Travel Guide and Tips
• Please respect the Balinese customs, rituals and traditions and follow the local rule and prohibitions. Your driver will happily clarify any of these for you.
• The sun is strong in beautiful Bali. Make sure that you bring sun block (even on overcast days) and a comfortable hat.
• Keep hydrated with lots of bottled water.
• Apply insect mosquito repellent.
• Dress casually, coolly and comfortably, but remember to dress properly when you visit a religious place.
• Choose comfortable footwear for walking. Some places can only be accessed by steps.
Below is a description of each of the places you will visit.
Barong and Kris Dance
The Barong and Keris Dance is a story about the fight between Barong, a good spirit and Rangda, a bad spirit. Barong is a mythological character of Bali and considered the king of the spirts, leader of the hosts of good and sworn enemy of Rangda as the Bali myths dictate.
The Barong and Kris dance is one of the Bali’s most iconic dance dramas, on par with the Legong and Kecak. Those with a keen interest in arts and culture will appreciate the performances the most, with daily shows scheduled at various stages throughout Bali’s main tourism areas – the most popular being at Batubulan in Gianyar, and the Denpasar suburbs.
Celuk Gold and Silver Art Village
Celuk Village is home to the most amazing artistic Gold and Silver art. Celuk Village is a traditional village situated near Ubud in the Gianyer Regency where you can appreciate the mountain culture which in many ways is similar to that of the traditional areas of Ubud and the other surrounding.
Celuk Village is famous for the incredible gold and silver handicrafts which are available around this area for very low prices. In the Sukawati area you will find craftsmen of a very high standard and you can barter over goods or even purchase them in a wholesale capacity.
Batuan Village
Batuan Village is famous for its artwork and style of painting which originated in the village in the 1930s and has since emerged into a major Balinese artistic style, known as a Batuan painting.
It is a major painting centre and contains a number of art galleries and cooperative art societies which have played a key role in promoting the art of Batuan. The village is also known for its performance of the ancient Gambuh dance, performed every Full Moon day.
Tirta Empul Temple
Tirta Empul is located close to the town of Tampaksiring in the village of Manukaya. The village is a 30-minute drive to the North of Ubud. The temple is built around the sacred spring at Tampak Siring and the spring water is used as the holy water for various religious ceremonies at the temple. The temple was founded in 926 AD and is dedicated to Vishnu, who is the Hindu God of water. The name of the temple actually means ‘holy water spring’ in Balinese.
Kintamani Village
The area of north-eastern Bali at the Mount Batur caldera, and which encompasses Penelokan, Toya Bungkah, Batur, Kedisan, Abung, Songan and Kintamani villages, is known widely as just Kintamani. Kintamani, Batur and Penelokan villages sit on the rim of the huge Batur caldera about 1500m above sea level, and offers dramatic views of the active volcano Mount Batur and serene Lake Batur. Toyo Bungkah village is down at the lake edge.
As well as the lake and the volcano, Kintamani is home to Pura Ulun Danu Batur, one of Bali’s key nine directional temples.
Tegallalang Rice Terraces
Tegallalang Rice Terraces are located only 20 minutes north of Ubud. The area is one of Bali’s most famous tourist attractions for it beautiful rice terraces.
If you want one of Bali’s best tourist photos, then this is the spot. Offering dramatic views and vistas, the rice terraces sprawl down and away on the slopes and across the valley. For a small fee, a farmer who is also a local elder and land owner invites visitors to purchase woven hat handmade by himself as well as sample his green coconut drink.
Ubud Monkey Forest
The Ubud Monkey forest is a nature reserve and Hindu temple complex, situation approx. 3km from the town’s centre. Its official name is the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary and its name as written on its welcome sign is the Padangtegal Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. The Ubud Monkey Forest is a popular tourist attraction and is often visited by over 10,000 tourists a month.
The Monkey Forest lies within the village of Padangtegal, which owns it. The village’s residents view the Monkey Forest as an important spiritual, economic, educational, and conservation center for the village.
