Ulun Danu Beratan Temple
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple
The Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is one of Bali’s more significant and picturesque temple complexes located in Bedugul, central Bali on Beratan Lake. The Bedugul area is strategically located between the northern and southern roadways in Bali, making it a popular holiday location for both the local Balinese and international tourists.
Ulun Danu Beratan translated means ‘the source temple of Lake Beratan’. This temple complex is Bali’s most iconic and famous of all the temples with spectacular scenery of the lake and the backdrop of the Bedugul mountain range providing fantastic photographic opportunities as well.
The Ulun Danu Beratan Temple was constructed around the 17th century as part of the prayer rituals of the Hindu trinity Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva as well as the goddess of the lake in Dewi Danu. The temple is one of Bali’s most photographed locations and a favourite for sightseers and those seeking recreation in the cool mountain climate and fresh air.
The origins of the temple can be traced all the way back to the Mengwi kingdom. Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is one of nine “Kahyangan Jagat Temples” which surround Bali, making it one of the most important temples for the Balinese, especially for Hindu. It consists of five compounds of temples and one Buddhist Stupa, they are:
• Penataran Agung Temple
• Dalem Purwa Temple
• Taman Beiji Temple
• Lingga Petak Temple (in the middle of Lake Beratan)
• Prajapati Temple
• Buddhist Stupa
Once you enter through the gates, you will notice traditional Balinese architecture and tiered shrines. Once inside the temple complex, you will discover three main shrines dedicated to the god Vishnu. You can experience the floating effect of the complex when the lake’s water levels rise. This is the perfect opportunity to take stunning photographs and to witness a truly majestic setting in the heart of Bali.
